Teacher Resources

A teacher’s first year in a new place - whether a rookie or a seasoned veteran - is particularly challenging, and teachers should anticipate long hours and intense effort, especially during the first semester. Since teachNOLA teachers work in high-need schools, often with limited resources, candidates are chosen for their ability to solve problems creatively and independently—an important factor in their success. Teachers have access to several resources, one of the most important being the network of other teachNOLA teachers with whom they form close relationships as they begin teaching.

Upon entering the program, the teachNOLA staff assists with logistical support, such as helping teachers manage the process of becoming full school employees. Teachers, however, are responsible for meeting individual school pre-employment requirements.

teachNOLA also provides communications, including periodic newsletters, and occassional special events.

Teachers often develop their ongoing support network at the school level. Although every situation is different, teachers may pursue opportunities to collaborate with co-teachers at their school, school-provided instructional specialists, assistant principals, principals or a grade- or subject-level team.

School assignments and other events facilitate connections among teachNOLA teachers, who often teach the same subjects or are clustered together in particular schools or areas of the city. Teachers can draw on these connections as a resource for planning, reflection, and shared encouragement as they strive for excellence in their individual classrooms.
