Program Eligibility
teachNOLA is designed to recruit, interview, and refer high-quality teachers for the Recovery School District and charter schools in New Orleans. We are looking for certified teachers with the commitment and determination to be successful for the children of New Orleans in a demanding classroom situation.
Strong applicants are those who have outstanding academic and professional records and who are committed to fostering academic excellence and ensuring achievement for all students, especially students who have persistently performed below grade-level. Teachers from outside of Louisiana are welcome and encouraged to apply.
Eligible candidates must have the following:
- Standard teacher certification
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university
- A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
- U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status
Candidates also cannot be currently working as a teacher in a New Orleans public school. teachNOLA exists to add capacity to public schools in New Orleans, thus the program does not accept applications from current New Orleans teachers, regardless of certification status. Degreed paraprofessionals and teaching assistants, however, are welcome to apply.
Standard teacher certification
All candidates must possess a valid teaching certificate for the state of Louisiana, or any other state. Emergency or temporary licenses are not valid. If you are in the process of becoming fully certified, you must receive your certification by June 2008.
Candidates will need to bring a copy of their teaching licenses (or proof that they will hold one by June 2008) with them to the Interview Event, if invited.
All candidates who hold a teaching certificate in a state other than Louisiana will need to apply for an Out-of-State (OS) License in Louisiana. For more information and to download the application, please click here.
For more information about what it takes to earn and demonstrate Louisiana certification, please visit our section on Louisiana Teacher Certification.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university by June 2008. You will need to provide official transcripts from all colleges attended when you attend the Interview Event, if invited.
Graduates of foreign universities must have their transcripts evaluated by an approved agency. When requesting an evaluation, be sure that the agency specifically states that you have received the U.S. equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in your subject area AND provides a full listing of your coursework. Applications that include foreign transcripts will not be reviewed until the completed evaluation has been mailed to the teachNOLA office.
Candidates requiring foreign transcript evaluation should visit the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), Office of International Education Services website at www.aacrao.org/credential/.
A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
Candidates must have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited college or university. Graduate courses may not be used or averaged with the undergraduate GPA.
If your college did not provide a GPAs, you will need to submit a letter from your school, with your transcript, explaining this and verifying that you would have earned at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Candidates with a GPA of lower than 3.0 may still apply, as long as they demonstrate additional achievement in other areas. You will be asked to explain a lower GPA on the application. All applications with GPAs below 3.0 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status
Due to the hiring requirements of most of our partner schools, teachNOLA applicants must ensure proof of legal work status (i.e., have U.S. citizenship, or permanent residency with a valid green card) to be eligible for the program. teachNOLA does not provide sponsorship for employment through this program.
