How to Apply

Eligibility

teachNOLA Teaching Fellows is a highly selective alternative route to teaching program designed for outstanding individuals dedicated to impacting student achievement in New Orleans’ high-need classrooms. To apply, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements. No previous coursework in education or teaching experience is required.

You must possess a bachelor’s degree by June 1, 2010 from a U.S. institution
Those who hold a bachelor’s degree or who are currently completing their bachelor’s degree coursework from an accredited university and expect to have the degree awarded no later than June 1, 2010. Please note that a bachelor's degree is a requirement for licensure.

Graduates of foreign universities must have their transcripts evaluated by an approved agency (see list below). When requesting an evaluation, be sure that the agency specifically states that you have received the U.S. equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in your subject area AND provides a full listing of your coursework. Applications that include foreign transcripts will not be reviewed until the completed evaluation has been faxed or mailed to the teachNOLA office.

You must possess an undergraduate GPA at or above an absolute minimum of 2.5
Individuals must possess a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited college or university. teachNOLA cannot consider applications with GPAs below 2.5 due to state certification requirements. Graduate courses may not be used or averaged with the undergraduate GPA.
If your college did not provide a GPA, you will need to submit a letter from your school, with your transcript, explaining this and verifying that you would have earned at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

You must possess an undergraduate GPA calculated on a 4.0 scale
Individuals must possess a cumulative undergraduate GPA calculated on a 4.0 scale from an accredited college or university.

You must not have (or be earning) a BA or MA in Education
teachNOLA applicants must not possess or be working towards a degree, bachelor’s or master’s, in education. Candidates who already hold a state teaching certificate are strongly encouraged to apply to teachNOLA certified program.

You must not have (or be earning) teaching certification in any state
Applicants that are already in possession of a teaching certificate from Louisiana (or another state) are not eligible for the teachNOLA Teaching Fellows program. Applicants who will become certified by June 2009 are also ineligible for the teachNOLA Teaching Fellows program. Experience as a substitute teacher or as a teacher on an emergency credential does not affect a candidate's eligibility.

If you are already certified, please view teachNOLA’s information for certified candidates by clicking here.

You must not be enrolled in or have completed another alternative route certification program
Candidates applying for the Summer 2010 Cohort enrolled in teacher certification and/or alternative route teacher preparation coursework who will have 12 or more credits completed by June 1, 2010 are not eligible to participate in the teachNOLA Summer Teaching Fellows program.

All Fellows, regardless of prior education coursework, will be required to participate fully in all components of the Fellows program, including the summer training institute and the completion of an approved certification program.

You must not currently work as a teacher in a New Orleans public school (Recovery School District, charter or New Orleans Public Schools)
teachNOLA Teaching Fellows exists to add teacher capacity to public schools in New Orleans in order to work towards closing the achievement gap. Therefore, teachNOLA Teaching Fellows does not accept applications from current New Orleans teachers, regardless of certification status. Degreed paraprofessionals, substitutes and teaching assistants, however, are welcome to apply.
