“Teaching in an inner-city school is not an easy task. Don’t think that it will be. You really have to be committed to this and willing to seek out help and resources to make it work. That being said, it’s certainly worthwhile. It’s so rewarding to see that “light bulb” come on when the students get it or when they are inspired by something.”

New Schools for New Orleans

New Schools for New Orleans (NSNO) is a local non-profit which is partnering with the Recovery School District to support the teachNOLA program. High quality teachers are statistically proven to be the single most important factor in student achievement. By bringing a critical mass of highly qualified teachers to New Orleans, teachNOLA is an instrumental partner in the success of New Orleans schools.

More than any other city in the nation, New Orleans has an unprecedented opportunity to provide all of its children with an excellent education. Once ranked among the worst school districts in the United States, New Orleans public schools are changing. New Schools for New Orleans knows that this transformation must succeed and has called on extraordinary talent and resources to ensure that it will. A catalyst of this transformation is the creation of outstanding public charter schools, which offer the city an unprecedented opportunity to improve public education in New Orleans, as well as to establish a national model for urban education reform. Accountable to rigorous standards and led by results-driven educators, these schools are improving public education in New Orleans by providing high-quality, data-driven instruction to all New Orleans children, regardless of neighborhood, race, or class.

New Schools for New Orleans was created in spring of 2006 to champion the recovery and reformation of public education in New Orleans. Since its founding, New Schools for New Orleans has worked relentlessly to develop the talent and resources needed to transform the New Orleans school system into a system of excellent public schools.

The mission of New Schools for New Orleans is to achieve our vision of excellent public schools for every child in New Orleans by:

  • Attracting and preparing talent to teach and lead,
  • Launching and supporting open-enrollment public charter schools, and
  • Advocating for accountable and sustainable high-quality public schools.

Since March 2006, NSNO has supported public schools by recruiting outstanding teachers and leaders; supporting exemplary school founders in the launching of new schools; providing extensive financial and operational support for newly developing schools; providing board governance and operational support to existing public schools; and supporting the coordination and distribution of informational resources for parents of New Orleans public school students.
